In 2019, PGSA is initiating a grad-mentor program designed to retain the positive aspects of the 2017 program and expand it, while avoiding the old pitfalls. In this program, about 12 or so motivated, committed graduate students will serve as mentors to incoming 1st-year students. The mentors will be listed below once picked, and will reach out to and check in with about 5-7 1st-year students. An attempt will be made to pair mentees with mentors who have similar research interests.

Mentees should feel free to reach out to their mentor with any questions, about academics, life, adjusting to Long Island, personal issues, etc. Metors will refer mentees as appropriate if they cannot answer a question personally, and mentees should feel free to reach out to any mentor.

Graduate mentors are matched to incoming students with thought given to research interest, country of origin, degree program at SBU, and gender. Not all of these qualities will be a perfect match between mentor and mentee, but even if you have a question your mentor doesn't have direct experience with, they can try to answer your questions anyway and additionally direct you to someone who can. Faculty mentors are assigned at random and there is no correlation between faculty personality/research and that of their respective grad mentor, nor to the 1st year students they mentor.
