In  2017, a mentorship program was introduced for the incoming class of graduate students. This provides access to 2 faculty members and 2 senior graduate students as mentors to each incoming student. The mentors are able to guide you on your academic needs and help you get started on your graduate school journey. This can be a great opportunity to receive mentorship and guidance from experienced faculty and students outside (and potentially inside) of your preferred academic field and will go a long way to resolving problems and helping adjust to Long Island and graduate life.

Mentors should check in with their mentees often in the first month or two, and should continue to do so periodically throughout the first years. Mentees should feel free to reach out to their mentor with any questions, about academics, life, adjusting to Long Island, personal issues, etc. Metors will refer mentees as appropriate if they cannot answer a question personally, and mentees should feel free to reach out to any mentor.

In 2017, a mentorship program was introduced for the incoming class of graduate students. This program had mixed success, depending on the engagement level of the (faculty and graduate student) mentors. It was discontinued the following year.

In 2019, PGSA is initiating a grad-mentor program designed to retain the positive aspects of the 2017 program and expand it, while avoiding the old pitfalls. In this program, about 12 or so motivated, committed graduate students will serve as mentors to incoming 1st-year students. The mentors will be listed below once picked, and will reach out to and check in with about 5-7 1st-year students. An attempt will be made to pair mentees with mentors who have similar research interests.
