If you don't have a car, on-campus housing makes the places you need to be much more accessible than off-campus housing does. You'll also be living much closer to most other students. Depending on the location it may also be easier to settle in as you'll have to bring less.

Also, sometime individual houses come with problems, like bed bugs, plumbing issues etc. All this can be quite stressful and overwhelming for those students who haven't lived by themselves before graduate school. Whereas in an on campus housing, you usually have full time maintenance that come in and fix the issue.
